At the turn of the 20th century, the Royal Navy relinquished control of the lands encompassing English Harbour, passing the torch to the Crown. By 1906, the colonial government of Antigua inherited this historic gem, which had been left to the ravages of time. The village of English Harbour began to shift to Falmouth Harbour, leaving behind a memory and a name. Despite this transition, the Dockyard remained a symbol of maritime ingenuity and historical significance.
Marina
Nelson's Dockyard Marina is the only continuously working Georgian Era dockyard in the world. English Harbour offers one of the most beautiful and safe natural anchorages in the Caribbean. Two hundred years of Royal Navy heritage alongside stunning beaches and modern amenities makes Nelson's Dockyard an extraordinary and unique yachting destination.
Environment
The National Parks Authority (NPA) Environment Unit (EU) was established in August 2011. Its overall purpose is to provide technical resources for the National Parks Authority to achieve its objectives, as specified under the National Parks Act (1984) for inter alia “the preservation, protection, management and development of the natural, physical and ecological resources of Antigua and Barbuda”. The work of the NPA-EU covers the marine and terrestrial Nelson Dockyard National Park (NDNP).
Tours
The Heritage Department's mission is to preserve and protect the Outstanding Universal Value of the Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites and the historical sites and features of significance to Antigua and Barbuda. The department aims to continue developing and expanding elements of the heritage tourism product whilst educating the wider populace.
