About 20 years ago, a handful of Indian families who had immigrated to the United States gathered once a month at a local church or school to worship and celebrate festivals. The families had a dream of building and maintaining a full-fledged Hindu temple in Delaware. At the time, it seemed like a long-term idea, but over the years, the Indian community grew, and the Hindu Temple Association raised funds to build the temple. Through patience and planning, the groundbreaking ceremony for the temple was held on October 20, 1996, on approximately 4.5 acres of land in Hagesin, purchased with donations from about 60 families who wanted to make this dream a reality.
Thanks to divine intervention and financial support from the local Indian community, construction began and the Hindu temple, Mahalakshmi Devasthanam, was built. The main deity is Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. The Hindu temple celebrated its Kumbabhishekam in May 2002.
The Delaware Hindu Temple will continue to serve as a true beacon of Indian culture in the present era, and will strive to educate the modern generation of Indians, in the ancient and rich values of our culture. The Hindu Temple in Delaware will provide a platform for all members to come together socially, culturally, and religiously in harmony.
The Hagesin Hindu Temple Association is a non-profit organization that serves the religious, cultural, and educational needs of the growing population of Indian families (6000+) in the tri-state area. The Hagesin Hindu Temple in Delaware is made possible by a talented Board of Trustees, comprised of people from diverse walks of life and professions, and the countless hours of hard work of dedicated volunteers, staff, and many others.
The primary objective of the Hindu temple is to cater to the spiritual needs of all Indian families and celebrate all important milestones, rituals and festivals in a truly traditional manner, thanks to our temple priests who are the vedic scholars of Hinduism. The temple aims to bring families together as a community and celebrate all important events within its premises.
The Hindu temple aims to teach the basics of Hinduism to all the youth through the Vedas and stories that exemplify the core values of the religion. It also addresses the spiritual needs of adults through spiritual seminars and classes designed for adults. The temple also provides the infrastructure to teach the most popular Indian languages to children through various language classes.
The temple promotes cultural awareness by regularly organizing cultural programs and events to provide our children and adults with multiple opportunities to get a glimpse of the best of culture and get a first-hand experience of how festivals are celebrated across various parts of India.
