Washington: Amid rising trade tensions between India and the United States, the US government has issued a stern advisory to Indian nationals, warning of serious consequences, including deportation, for overstaying visas.

In a press statement, the US embassy emphasized that all visitors must strictly adhere to the terms and duration of stay permitted under their visa category. The advisory comes in the backdrop of ongoing diplomatic friction, including a recent announcement by US President Donald Trump to levy additional tariffs on imports from India—a move that has drawn objections from New Delhi.

“You must respect the terms of your US visa and the authorized period of stay,” the statement read. “Overstaying beyond the date indicated on your electronic Form I-94 can result in visa cancellation, removal proceedings, and ineligibility for future US visas.”

The embassy further warned that violating visa norms could have long-term implications on an individual's ability to travel, work, or pursue education in the US.

Form I-94, issued by the Department of Homeland Security, records the arrival and departure details of foreign nationals and indicates the duration of legal stay in the country. Authorities use this document to monitor compliance with immigration laws.

The advisory is being seen as part of a broader push by US authorities to tighten immigration enforcement.
