Washington: More than 80,000 non-immigrant visas have been revoked in the United States since Donald Trump assumed office as President in January, a senior State Department official has said.

The move comes amid the Trump administration's tightened immigration policies and stricter visa scrutiny, affecting categories such as student, tourist, and temporary work visas.

According to the official, over 80,000 visas were revoked during the past 10 months alone. Of these, about 16,000 were cancelled for offences related to drunk driving, 12,000 for assault and similar violations, and around 8,000 for theft.

The official further said that in August alone, more than 6,000 student visas were cancelled for being expired or issued under unlawful circumstances.

The large-scale revocation is part of the administration's broader effort to reinforce immigration enforcement and ensure compliance with US visa norms, the State Department said.
