Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has taken over the management of a private school in Ahmedabad after authorities found multiple violations of education laws, nearly four months after a Class 10 student was allegedly stabbed to death by a fellow student, officials said on Monday.
The decision follows an inquiry ordered after the incident at Seventh Day Adventist School in the Khokhra area, which had triggered protests by parents alleging administrative lapses and delay in providing medical assistance to the injured student.
According to a notification issued by the state Education Department, the inquiry revealed repeated breaches of statutory provisions under the Right to Education Act, affiliation norms of education boards, the Bombay Primary Education Act and state rules.
Officials said the school violated board rules by operating ICSE- and Gujarat Board-affiliated institutions on the same premises without proper disclosure, started additional classes without approval, and ran the school through multiple trusts instead of a single non-profit entity. Irregularities were also found in infrastructure approvals, staffing, operation of two shifts without permission and commercial activities such as sale of books, amounting to profiteering.
The inquiry also flagged violations of land lease conditions and discrepancies between approved building plans and actual structures.
Considering that over 10,000 students are enrolled, the government decided to take over the school in the interest of students. No new admissions will be allowed during the takeover period.
The Ahmedabad District Education Officer has been appointed administrator until further orders, the notification said.
