Chennai: Allegations of large-scale irregularities in egg distribution under the mid-day meal scheme have triggered concern among students, parents and nutrition staff in North Chennai's Villivakkam union.

According to reports, nearly 2,000 eggs are being supplied short every day in 103 government schools across Ambattur, Veerapuram and Porur areas.

While 13,688 students are enrolled, only 11,653 eggs are being delivered daily, leaving a shortfall of 2,035. This amounts to nearly 45,000 eggs missing in a single month.

Instances of under-supply have been recorded in several schools. At Ayapakkam Government High School, only 200 out of 405 students receive eggs. Similarly, Velappansavadi High School gets 200 eggs for 250 students, while Porur Boys' Higher Secondary School receives 100 for 150 students.

Nutrition workers say they are under pressure to “manage with the available stock,” forcing them to make difficult choices on distribution. Parents allege that after the launch of the breakfast scheme, the government's focus on the mid-day meal programme has weakened, resulting in cutbacks on eggs, food items and even cooking staff.

A single organizer is reportedly handling five to seven schools in many places, further straining the system.

Public groups have urged the District Collector and Villivakkam Union officials to investigate the lapses and ensure supply in line with student strength.

When contacted, a social welfare officer said eggs and meals are being provided as per records of students registered with EMIS. “Supplies are made based on organizer approval. If any deficiency is reported, it will be properly investigated,” the official assured.
