New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education has unveiled a revised curriculum for the 2026-27 academic session, introducing a phased rollout of the three-language formula from Class 6 and a two-level system for mathematics and science in Class 9.

Aligned with the National Education Policy, the new framework mandates that students study three languages from Class 6, with at least two being Indian languages. The structure follows a three-tier system—R1, R2, and R3—as recommended by the National Curriculum Framework.

Officials clarified that the third language (R3) will begin in Class 6 from 2026-27, with full implementation taking effect when the cohort appears for board exams in 2031. Students returning from foreign schools may be granted exemptions under specific conditions.

A key reform is the introduction of a two-level system in mathematics and science for Class 9 students. While all students will take a mandatory standard examination (80 marks), those seeking deeper proficiency can opt for an additional advanced paper (25 marks) designed to assess higher-order thinking skills.

The advanced paper will be optional and its scores will not be included in the overall aggregate. However, students scoring at least 50 per cent will have the advanced qualification separately reflected in their mark sheets. The first Class 10 board exams under this system will be conducted in 2028.

The board is also expanding its focus on future-ready skills. Computational thinking and artificial intelligence will be introduced as compulsory subjects for Classes 9 and 10, initially as internally assessed modules and later as a board exam subject for Class 10 from 2029. These subjects are already being introduced in Classes 3 to 8 in the current academic session.

Additionally, art education, vocational education, and physical education will be made mandatory for Classes 9 and 10. While art and physical education will continue to be assessed internally, vocational education will become a compulsory subject with a board or annual examination from the 2027-28 academic session.

The revised curriculum marks a significant shift toward multidisciplinary learning, skill development, and flexibility in line with national education reforms.
